Understanding Grief
Living with Loss
Grief is a natural response to losing someone or something that matters to us. It can follow the death of a loved one, and also the end of a relationship, the loss of a pregnancy, a change in health, or the loss of a job, a home or the future you expected.
There's no right way to grieve and no set timeline. Many people find their way through with the support of family and friends. Sometimes, though, grief can feel too heavy to carry alone, and talking it through with a psychologist may help.
When counselling may help
- Grief that feels overwhelming, or isn't easing over time
- Finding it hard to manage work, relationships or everyday tasks
- Feeling numb, stuck, guilty or angry
- A sudden, violent or traumatic loss
- A loss that brings up earlier losses or painful memories
- Grief that others don't always recognise, such as pregnancy loss or the end of a relationship
How I Work
Counselling for Grief and Loss
In our sessions, you can talk about your loss at your own pace. Together we'll make sense of what you're feeling, look after how you're coping day to day, and find ways to carry the loss alongside the rest of your life.
I draw on approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). When a loss was sudden or traumatic, distressing memories of it can get in the way of grieving. If that's the case for you, we may talk about whether EMDR therapy could be part of your care.
